The STAR Community Rating System, originally released in 2012, marked an important contribution to the movement to create more livable, sustainable communities for all. Since then, nearly 60 cities and counties have been certified under the STAR framework and hundreds of others have used the framework to guide local planning, decision-making, and investment. Over the past year, a team of STAR Communities staff, committee members, member communities, and volunteers worked together on the first major update of the rating system and its accompanying technical guide.
